Types of motion sensors
The following types of motion sensors are most commonly used in burglar alarms:
Ultrasonic motion sensors
The first motion sensors for burglar alarms were based on ultrasonic technology. Sound waves were emitted by a detector and the reflected sounds were analyzed to detect changes in the protected area. In the event of motion detection, the sensor communicated with the control panel of the security system.
Infrared motion sensors
PIR motion sensors can protect large open spaces with invisible IR technology to detect the heat emitted by a person. PIR motion sensors are used both indoors and outdoors.
Microwave sensors
Microwave motion sensors intruder alarms work independently of natural phenomena. Fog, rain or snow, frost, will not affect the reliability of protection. Such devices emit microwave pulses that pick up the reflection of any moving objects.
Combined motion sensors
Combined motion sensors often have dual technology: IR and microwave. Infrared detects the movement of warm objects, while microwaves transmit and analyze the reflected signal. They operate in different parts of the spectrum as one detection method uses passive and the other active sensing.
What is the difference between indoor and outdoor motion sensors
The case of outdoor motion sensors for burglar alarms is stronger and protected from various weather factors. This prevents rain or dust from getting inside the device. Outdoor motion detectors are also designed to operate in extreme temperatures.
Outdoor motion sensor Ajax — MotionCam Outdoor PhOD
The MotionCam Outdoor Motion Detector (PhOD) is a wireless device that supports photo verification, as well as Photo on Demand and Photo by Script. The maximum detection range of the MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller motion sensor is adjustable up to 15 meters. Detects attempts to block the view of the device thanks to the masking detection system. The sensor ignores animals up to 80 cm tall when properly installed and configured. The MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller outdoor sensor works as part of the Ajax security system. Communication with the control panel is carried out via two secure radio protocols: Jeweller for alarm and event transmission, and Wings protocol for photo transmission. The communication range with the control panel in the absence of obstacles is maintained at a distance of up to 1700 meters.
The principle of operation of a street motion sensor with photo verification
The MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller wireless motion sensor with support for photo verification of alarms detects the movement of an outside person in the guarded area. Using two built-in infrared sensors, the device captures moving objects with a temperature close to the temperature of the human body. When the armed sensor detects motion, it sends an alarm signal to the security control panel. And the control panel, in turn, activates the sirens, launches automation scripts, and informs the security company and users. When the MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller detects motion, the built-in camera takes a series of pictures to show you the cause of the alarm, so you don’t have to worry.
How alarm photo verification works
Photo verification of motion sensor alarms allows you to assess the situation at the guarded facility using the built-in camera, which can take from 1 to 5 pictures with a resolution of 320 × 176, as well as up to 3 pictures with a resolution of 640 × 352 pixels. The number of photos and their resolution is set individually. Photo verification allows you to receive visual confirmation of alarms by MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller and other Ajax devices and request a photo from the sensor at any time in order to check the situation at the facility or find out the cause of the alarm. For shooting in the dark, the MotionCam Outdoor Wireless Motion Sensor (PhOD) is equipped with an infrared light that activates in low light conditions. For example, at night or in dark rooms. When shooting in such conditions, MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) takes black and white photos.
MotionCam Outdoor Motion Sensor (PhOD) Jeweller takes alarm photo, scripted photo and photo on demand.
The time it takes for a photo to be delivered to the Ajax application depends on the resolution of the photos, Wings signal strength, sensor connection method (works directly with the control panel or via a repeater), and internet connection speed.
Motion sensor alarm photo
The sensor takes a photo when it is armed and when the sensor detects movement in the armed area. A series of photos is played in the Ajax application as an animation. This allows you to assess the situation in the territory under protection in dynamics.
Photo on request
Photo on Demand allows MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller motion sensor users to take pictures with built-in photo-verified motion sensor cameras. The function makes it possible to check the situation at the facility, monitor the state of the house, etc. Depending on the settings, a photo can be taken at any time or when the sensors with photo verification are in armed mode. Photos upon request are received only by users of the system, they are not sent to the control panel of the security company.
With the “photo by scenario” function, the sensor’s camera takes pictures automatically when Ajax fire sensors are triggered. The feature is disabled by default.
Features of MotionCam Outdoor Wireless Motion Detector (PhOD)
Outdoor motion sensor MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller has a number of the following features:
False alarm protection
Like Ajax indoor sensors, MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller uses the SmartDetect algorithm. Thanks to this algorithm, the device instantly analyzes the thermal diagram read by the sensor: the intensity of infrared radiation, the speed of movement, the size of the thermal spot, the time spent in the detection zone, and other parameters.
Working with Jeweller and Wings data transfer protocols
The motion sensor uses Jeweller technology to transmit events, and the Wings protocol to transmit photos. These are two-way wireless communication protocols that provide fast and reliable communication between a security control panel or repeater and connected devices. The protocols support floating-key block encryption and device recognition on every communication session. This principle of operation helps to prevent sabotage and substitution of the device. To control communication with the system’s devices and display their statuses, Ajax applications provide a polling system — a control panel — a sensor with a frequency of 12 to 300 seconds. The polling frequency is set individually.
Encrypted communication
All data stored and transmitted by the street motion sensor is protected by block encryption with a floating key.
Immunity to animals
If the MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller motion sensor is properly installed and configured, the device will not respond to animals up to 80 cm tall. In order to effectively ignore all interference typical of the street, the outdoor sensor from Ajax is equipped with two IR sensors that read signals from two areas of space. They raise an alarm if movement is detected by both sensors at the same time.
Temperature compensation
Temperature compensation is a software mechanism that allows you to keep the thermal diagram contrast, even if the ambient temperature is close to human body temperature. This mechanism allows the sensor to effectively detect movement over the entire operating temperature range: from -25°C to +50°C.
Masking Protection
Masking is an attempt to block the sensor’s view by painting, obscuring, or placing obstacles in front of the device’s lens. The masking detection function is always active and works regardless of the armed mode of the sensor or the system. If a problem is detected, the system will notify users and the security company. For additional protection of the camera and the masking detection system from false positives in heavy rain or snow, a Hood is provided, which is included in the sensor kit.
Installing an outdoor motion sensor
The MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD) Jeweller outdoor motion sensor is suitable for protecting the territory of a protected facility: a parking lot, a private house, unheated premises, offices and other facilities. The sensor is suitable for installation both outdoors and indoors. The installation of a motion sensor should be entrusted to professionals, as they know all the features of the effective installation of devices.

Outdoor motion sensors in the security system
Outdoor motion detectors in the security system are motion detection devices that are designed for outdoor use. The housing of these sensors is often rugged and waterproof, allowing them to be mounted outdoors. Outdoor motion detectors for alarms are suitable for monitoring activity outside the home, warehouse, office, etc. In order to make sure that there are no unauthorized persons in the closed area. When the outdoor sensor detects movement in the detection zone, depending on the settings, it activates the siren, informs the system users and the security company about the alarm, turns on the light and more.
